Lakewood Area Highlights

Lakewood is the ideal place to use as a base for touring South Sound's many attractions. Located just off Interstate 5, it offers everything from excellent value in lodging and dining Thornewood Castle.

If you're looking for a comfortable place, Best Western Lakewood Motor Inn offers close proximity to the center of Lakewood, while America's Best Value Inn and La Quinta Inn & Suites give easy Interstate 5 on-off access. Or sleep in the same room where Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft once slept at Thornewood Castle Bed & Breakfast. This magnificent mansion dates from the turn of the century and is one of a few private castles in the U.S. It was the movie set for Stephen King's Rose Red.

Lakewood also offers a range of dining and shopping. Lakewood Towne Center caters to everyone. Then there's The Key Antiques, the Lakewood Gallery, and Design Gallery. Unique dining opportunities include Steeped in Comfort and Carr's Restaurant. And, if you have time, Lakewood Playhouse offers up some fine entertainment.

Within a twenty-mile radius, there are a number of lakes where you can enjoy scenic beauty, picnicking facilities, and recreational

fun. American Lake and Steilacoom Lake are great for a leisurely boat row to fishing and water-skiing. There's also swimming.

For park lovers there's Fort Steilacoom Park–a 340 acres with trails through wooded areas and around Waughop Lake, or Seeley Lake Park. This 47-acre park offers paths that wind through woods and wetlands.

For golfers, there are two public courses: Fort Steilacoom Golf Course and nearby Meadow Park Golf Course.

Lakewood history includes being home to Fort Steilacoom, which played a major role in the settling of Western Washington. There's also the Lakewood History Museum.

Lakewood is also a close neighbor to Fort Lewis Army Post and McChord Air Force Base. Both have museums–Fort Lewis Military Museum and McChord's Air Museum.
