An Inspirational Experience

Container Wars

May the Best Design Win

Lakewold Gardens is pleased to present you with the newest of our Signature Events: Container Wars

Styled in a similar fashion to our ever-popular Beautiful Tables Showcase, Container Wars will give designers, both novice and professional,  an opportunity to strut their garden design talents and show off to the world.

What is Container Wars?
Container Wars is our newest edition to the Lakewold Gardens signature events.  Each August, Lakewold will host space for designers, both professional and novice, to showcase unique small container garden design throughout the estate.  Containers and plant design are at the designer’s choosing.  Professional judges in the areas of horticulture and design will be brought in, and Lakewold visitors will also have the opportunity to vote on their favorite.

 About the Event

  • Lakewold Gardens will provide space in varying areas in the garden for containers to be displayed.
  • Lakewold Gardens will provide signage on each container stating the designers name, company (if applicable) and container contents.  This info will be removed during judging to ensure judging is done fairly.
  • Lakewold staff will provide needed watering of containers for the duration of the display.
  • Lakewold reserves the right to remove any containers found to harbor invasive species or diseased material.  The designer will be contacted as soon as is reasonable if either of these are found.
  • At the end of the event, designers may come pick up their containers, or donate them to the gardens (donations are tax-deductible).

General Rules

  • Designers may only design one container.
  • Containers must be at least 18” X 12”.
  • Containers can be no larger than can be moved by two average strength people.
  • Plant choices are at the designer’s discretion, but invasive species are not to be used.
  • Designers must provide Lakewold Garden with a complete plant list and watering requirements no later than noon on Friday before the start of the display.
  • Designers should plan on stopping by a minimum of once per week for grooming of their container.  This is recommended to be done Mondays or Tuesdays, but other times in the week can be arranged.

  • Judges, staff & board will choose “Best of Show”.
  • Visitors will vote for the “People’s Choice” award for both novice and professional containers.
  • Judges will choose winning containers for both novice and professional levels for Best Full Sun, Part Sun and Shade Containers.
  • Recognition will be given to container winners.
