Garden Photography Course
Wednesdays March 24th – April 28th 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
Do you wish your images could capture the heart and soul of a rose? Consider taking the Garden Photography Course led by Jim Oliver, www.jimoliverphotography.com. This course is geared toward the individual who has taken a few pictures, but would like to learn and practice some new techniques. The course topics include improving image composition and balance, use of available light, and use of camera settings. Not only will you gain knowledge about garden photography, you will have the opportunity to practice photographing the flowers blooming around you in the beautiful settings of Lakewold Gardens. Organic Gardening Primer Class
April 14th 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Learn the fundamentals of organic gardening, such as soil amendments, timing of compost and fertilizer applications, and the basics of Integrated Plant Health Management (IPHM). Led by Garden Manager Katie Burki the class will also cover basic pest and disease problems that plague Northwest gardens and discuss how to treat them in the least toxic manner. Bring your questions and ideas pertaining to your own garden, even a sample of a disease problem to share. You will go away with a better idea of what it really means to be an organic gardener. The Informed Gardener, Part II

Linda Chalker-Scott PH.D. is returning to Lakewold by popular demand. Join us as she discusses her recently published book The Informed Gardener Blooms Again. This is a great second part series to her 2009 lecture, as Linda addresses sustainable landscaping practices and demystifies common misconceptions that plague home gardeners and horticulture professionals. Herb Garden Favorites

Join owner of Creative Gardener, Sue Goetz, for a five senses discovery in the herb garden. Learn about theme gardening for fragrance, culinary, healing and more. Participants will get to know the top ten favorite herbs as well as the many ways to grow and use them. The class will also explore the Knot Garden at Lakewold which is filled with many herbs. Introduction to Ikebana
June 2nd 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Lakewold is offering an introductory class on the Japanese art of flower arranging, Ikebana. Led by Ikebana instructor, Patricia Smith, this class will provide participants with a brief overview of the history and techniques of Ikebana. Participants will then venture into the gardens to collect pieces for the hands-on portion of the class to create an Ikebana arrangement to take home. Basic Pruning for Ornamentals Class
June 23rd 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Join Garden Manager Katie Burki for a hands-on pruning class and learn the basics of ornamental shrub pruning, including proper use and care for tools, techniques, and pruning cuts. The first half of the class will be instructional and the remainder of the class will take place in the garden for a hands-on session to try your new skills. Cutting Garden Perennials

Sue Goetz, owner of Creative Gardener, will be sharing her knowledge of garden plans, plants, and creative ideas to grow a cutting garden. The class will discuss care and planting for the best-suited perennials to create texture and color through the season, and cover the newest introductions to the tried and true classics. Participants will also learn about techniques for cutting and preserving fresh cut and dried florals. Then explore Lakewold’s cutting garden for ideas and examples. Hyper-Tufa Trough Making Workshop
July 14th 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Come and enjoy a summer evening at Lakewold while making your own Hyper-Tufa trough with Garden Manager Katie Burki. Bring a form that you would like to use as a mold and we will provide the rest. This workshop will cover the basics of trough making and you will create your own to take home. The class size is limited to 12 participants. Please note: Your form must not taper at the top and your form should be reasonably sized as they can get quite heavy. Also, your trough will need to “cure” before use, details will be provided at the workshop.
