To Do's for January and February"Year Round Propagation"

This is a great time of year to start your seeds for alpine, perennials and shrubs. You can place most seeds in small pots and then cover them with a small layer of grit or a sand and peat mixture which will aid in drainage. Finally, place them in a cold frame to be conditioned or stratified by natural low temperatures during late winter and early spring.

Horticulture term - stratification: Certain seeds will not germinate immediately upon sowing and require a period of 'rest'. This rest will include a climate of low temperatures and moist conditions, which will soften the outer covering of the seed to aid in successful germination. This process is called stratification.
