The Garden Shop

The Garden Shop is located just inside the entrance to Lakewold Gardens in the original 1918 Carriage House and is open the same hours as Lakewold Gardens.

PLANTS AND SEEDS

Unusual and rare varieties of many of the plants seen growing at Lakewold are for sale at The Garden Shop. Shade plants are a specialty but we strive for "different". We have a great selection of rock garden plants from Mt. Tahoma Nursery, and perennials, shrubs, and trees from local growers.

Early in the Spring we have the famous Blue Poppy plants, (Meconopsis betonicifolia.) We get them once each year and they are usually gone in about two weeks. All of the plants at The Garden Shop are grown locally and are well acclimated. We love vines!! The Arctic Beauty ornamental kiwi (the one that looks like it has been painted with pink and white) that graces the North entrance to the Sunroom is a favorite and we always have plenty of them (Actinidia kolomikta) on hand. Seeds are always a challenge and one of the most rewarding avenues to good gardening. We carry seeds from Renee's Seeds, specialist in heirloom and rediscovered perennials, herbs and vegetables.

BOOKS AND VIDEOS

We have specialty garden titles including out of print and small press.  The garden video section is a favorite. Tour and how-to garden videos are available, including productions by the Royal Horticulture Society. You can sit at home and tour the gardens of Ireland, England, the Cornwall coast, Kew, Giverny and the Caribbean or learn how to do everything from composting to water gardening.

HUMBUGS, HOBNOBS AND TREACLE DABS

Vickie, proprietress of the Garden Shop, is always well stocked with wonderful British imports of jams, marmalades, every day tea and biscuits, and sweets like Violet Crumbles and Penguins.

TOOLS AND ANTIQUES

The Garden Shop is not only a gift shop, it is also a garden tool center. The most popular tool at Lakewold is the Nijiri Hoe, a little $12 tool that we call the "world's best weeder". We have carried them for 11 years and have many return visitors who buy extra to share with their gardening friends. Our tools are high quality, serious gardening tools. Our current favorites are the Hori Hori knife, the Trake, and the Nobori Sickle and some locally made Diggits. Little antiques are sprinkled throughout The Garden Shop, everything from vases to cooking utensils, and anything else that is remotely connected to gardening. We have a very eclectic mix. It isn't just a gift shop. It is a fully functioning garden shop.

HANGING AROUND

The Garden Shop is a great place to meet many of our local gardeners. We have a great time sharing garden triumphs and tragedies and gathering the newest horticultural information. There is always good conversation, pleasant Celtic music, coffee, tea, cookies and an all-round relaxing atmosphere. We're a comfort zone.

THREE COMMENTS

We usually hear three comments at The Garden Shop sometime during the day.

1) "It smells so good in here!" (lots of soaps and candles).

2) "I have to go around five times just to see everything!" (we love to shop, too).

3) "Are you a gardener?" (ABSOLUTELY!).
